H_A_R_D_P_A_P_E_R 2024

In late 2023 I was invited by artist Johanna Melvin to participate in the show H_A_R_D_P_A_P_E_R - taking place at the Phoenix Art Space in Brighton from 2 March - 14 April.

H_A_R_D_P_A_P_E_R is the third in a series of exhibitions at Phoenix Art Space that highlight work by over 50 contemporary abstract painters. This iteration focusses on works on paper, from preparatory studies to finished paintings, acknowledging the different qualities of surface that can influence mark making. For this exhibition artists from the previous two have been asked to select a piece of their own work, and invite another artist to be involved.

In response to the brief, I developed a new body of works on paper, which tied in also with the metal sculpture course that I am currently undertaking. I have been researching shapes in architecture, fashion and sculpture intensively in the past few months. Keeping the visual language simple and focusing on the material of very heavy weight Saunders Waterford 100% cotton paper, I arrived at Pocket #4 as my submission to the show.

Some studio experiments with paper - some are forming the basis for sculptural pieces. The shapes drawn out intuitively by my own body movements initially in an attempt to find new compositions for both 2D and 3D works.
