Concept development at UWE

I’m really excited to be visiting UWE next week (Bristol art college in simple terms), working on a project with Gary Embury on the illustration course there. I really love working with the students, helping to get their minds working on developing ideas and moving away from literal thinking and into narrative concepts. It’s such an important skill to have for an illustrator, especially for editorial work. It’s always heart warming and inspiring to see those that really ‘get it’ thrive on the short deadlines and having to work their brains visually. There are so many brilliant examples of illustrators who are inspiring in that way. To name a few one of my all time faves is Jim Sillavan, his mindset is awesome, he always inspires me with his way of looking at the world. There are so many brilliant illustrators, some of them younger and some of them older. I’ve always thought a really good ‘young un’ is Paddy Molloy who has done some great work, and then there is the superb Adrian Johnson of course. I could go on, but now is not really the time for a compendium of illustration….to be continued..

I have finally sorted out the studio space at the historical Iliffe Yard, which will be open for artwork viewings for both commercial and private sales. The yard is only a few minutes walk from the controversial new Strata Building, currently dividing opinion both locally and globally; personally I quite like it.  The yard is full of creative businesses and has open studio events twice a year, so watch this space for further information. There is also The Electric Elephant cafe and gallery serving up tasty food and good coffee. Izzy the dog has settled in nicely (and those cushion covers may soon be available to purchase!)
